Day 9

June 2
Breakfast this morning was tiramisu, a chocolate scone, berry yogurt, and cappuccino. Way more sugar that necessary, but I did not realize the scone was chocolate until after I had bit into it. I was about halfway through my meal when Nanny requested that I retrieve her a fork. So I stood up and brought her one. About ten minutes later, I looked to my lap to brush off some renegade crumbs, and the chair fabric was once again staring back up at me, my proper napkin on the table near my plate. Horrified that one of the staff had noticed, I imagined a snide grin pasted across its lack of face and once more put it back where I had not noticed I had picked it up from (see yesterday if you are not rolling on the floor laughing). I got dressed in “church clothes”, meaning pants that fell past my knee and a shirt that didn’t show my shoulders. We planned to visit the cathedrals of Venice today. Unfortunately, there is only one cathedral in Venice, and the line to enter was so long that we were out of breath by the time we had reached its end. Instead we strolled, or more realistically, we dodged our fellow tourists down the coast of the island, lined with gondolas, water busses, and street vendors. The shopping began. The desire to find the perfect items at the very best price drove us to walk through most of the island, shopping our way through St. Marcus Piazza, all the way to some bridge very far away, the name of which now escapes me.

You can see all the people you have to work your way through for the good deals.

I came back to the hotel with quite the armload. The plan was to meet in the lobby of the hotel for a scheduled gondola ride that we would share with four other people. I put on one of my dresses and Nanny wore a linen shirt she had bought today and a pair of black pants. Let me tell you, do not wear a dress on a gondola. It was rather awkward, attempting to get on, sit and enjoy, and exit the gondola while monitoring myself for fashion feauxpas. Luckily, I’m sure I did a good job, and I enjoyed the ride very much.

The tip of the gondola, I was sitting backwards on a wooden stool in the front

Nanny really enjoyed the ride, as you can see here

After we docked in front of the hotel, Nanny and I went out for a very nice dinner. I had something called baked potato dumplings and pumpkin soup, both delicious. For dessert I had some extravagant form of chocolate cake and another cappuccino. I now write from the lobby of the hotel, the only place I can access the overcharged internet. As I currently have 3 minutes to get these two posts up, I will have to post the pictures after I arrive in Florence. I am now happily caught up with all my days, and if the internet is a better deal at the next few hotels, I shouldn’t get quite that far behind again. Enjoying my last night in this magnificent city of Venice, I will soon retire to the happy bed awaiting me. Goodnight all!
