June 1
It had been previously decided that today would be a day of rest, as I had been thoroughly grumpy the day or so before due to sleep deprivation. We rolled out of bed in time to come downstairs for breakfast, which consisted of a fruit filled croissant (which seem to be pretty popular around these parts), strawberry yogurt, some sort of fruit and jelly topped cake, and cappuccino. The chairs in the breakfast room have a piece of fabric placed over the cushion with a little golden tassel hanging from the back. When we sat down I put my napkin politely in my lap and realized I had forgotten a fork. So I stood up, retrieved a fork, and sat back down. Somewhere along the way, I looked at the table and saw my napkin still on the table where I had placed it when I had stood up. Looking down in my lap, I realized that the chair fabric was staring back up at me. Surprised and embarrassed, I placed it back under my bottom where it rightfully belonged as discreetly as I possibly could. With our bellies happy we returned to our room for another hour or so of sleep. When we awoke around 11:30, got dressed, and took the elevator downstairs to ask the man behind the front desk where a few items of interest are located in relation to our hotel, such as the ATM and pharmacy (aka drug store, like Walgreens). After that we took to the streets of Venice, where the shopping is plentiful. In Milan and other places shopping generally entails high priced couture stores that charge two thousand dollars for a shiny belt. But here in Venice, shopping is much more like a marketplace, where every store sells the same twenty or so items and the object of the game is to figure out which one has the best price. We used the day to assess the prices of the wares. Venice if famous for its glass, which I did not know but I’m sure many of you do. The shops are all about the same tiny size, filled to the brim with creative shapes for their famous glass. Necklaces, bracelets, rings, chandeliers, candlesticks, picture frames, doorknobs, knickknacks and patty whacks; the list goes on and on. We had very good priced delicious sandwiches for lunch, and ended the day with pasta and gelato.
